Why are Oil Changes So Important?

Engine oil is essential to the performance and longevity of your Nissan. As your engine runs, the combustion and moving parts cause friction and heat. A layer of oil is necessary to keep the parts lubricated, without it the engine would seize in minutes. As oil runs through the engine, the oil will become contaminated with carbon, particles of metal, water vapor, and acids from the combustion process. The oil filter will trap some of these contaminants, but when the filter’s element is saturated, the oil will deteriorate and lose its lubricating ability. If old oil is left in the vehicle too long, it will begin to degrade engine parts through excessive wear, and sludge deposits will build up on engine components.

Synthetic or Conventional?

In your Nissan vehicle, synthetic oil is proven to be the best performing when compared to conventional oil. Advantages of synthetic oil include:

  • Synthetic oil does not thicken in cold weather or thin in hot weather, unlike conventional oil. This is better for the engine, as the oil can move through the engine faster at the time of ignition.
  • Synthetic oil has more strength at a molecular level, therefore the molecules will not be torn apart when there is extreme pressure.
  • Synthetic oil is more pure and clean than conventional oil, meaning it contains fewer impurities.
  • Synthetic oil outperforms conventional oil with additive packages, which contain detergents and friction modifiers.
  • Although synthetic oil is more costly upfront, it will save more due to its longevity. Rather than having conventional oil replaced every 3,000 miles, synthetic oil will last up to 10,000 miles (check your owner’s manual for manufacturer’s recommendations).
  • Nissan now specifically recommends synthetic oil for new vehicles. A low-viscosity oil will reduce internal friction, and result in a more efficient engine. Using a different oil can void a factory warranty.

How to Check Oil Level

Central Houston Nissan recommended that you check your oil levels once a month, and before any long trips. It is best to check your oil levels whenever you are fueling up your vehicle. You can check your oil levels by doing the following:

  • Ensure your engine has reached its normal operating temperature.
  • Park on a level surface, and turn off your engine.
  • Allow the engine to cool down for a few minutes.
  • Open the hood of the vehicle.
  • Remove the oil dipstick, wipe it clean, and reinsert it.
  • Remove the dipstick, and hold it horizontally to avoid any oil dripping. Examine the oil level, if it is not in between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick you should top off the oil.
  • Each Nissan model has its own requirements, so we recommend that you review your owner’s manual for the appropriate oil for your vehicle.

Oil Change FAQs

Regular Nissan oil changes will help maintain your vehicle's value, lifespan, and overall performance by lubricating your engine.

Common warning signs include odd noises or engine behaviors, overheating, and poorer-than-usual fuel economy. If you’re on level ground and your engine is off for a time, you can check your oil level by inspecting the dipstick.

Yes, this will help improve the longevity of the oil in your Nissan.

No, although Nissan Genuine Synthetic Oil is recommended for its longevity and other benefits. Review your owner's manual for more information regarding the best oil for your Nissan model.

When the “change engine oil” message appears, it means an oil change is recommended. When your oil has been changed, this message will disappear.

Synthetic oil is made from base oil, powder additives, and a carrier oil that enforces an even distribution of the additives.
